Weekend Sports Wrap-Up
Starting local, our Saint John's Prep Eagles are 2-0 on the new season, having beaten Masconomet and Peabody. By a quirk in the schedule, they face only one other Catholic school in the first half of the season, but then the last 5 weeks they play nothing but Catholic Conference rivals. The Prep started off quickly last year, too, but sunk to mediocrity in the second half. All may yet be well at the corner of Spring and Summer.
Boston College is in a rebuilding year. No question about that. They are 1-1 so far, and 0-1 in the ACC. As long as they beat Notre Dame later this season, all will be well at the Heights.
Despite losing Hollywood's own quarterback, and playboy of the Western World Tom Brady, in the first quarter of the first game, the New England Patriots are 2-0 so far, under Matt Cassel. They are building on the record for most consecutive regular season wins. Now all they need to do is wipe out the painful memory of that Super Bowl loss last winter, and all will be well with the Pats.
And the Red Sox. Most of Red Sox Nation was in despair last week, when we had the Devil Rays at home, and had pulled to within a half game, but Papelbon, of all people, blew a save, and the next game ended with a 14-inning loss. But they have done well since, beating Toronto in 3 out of 4 games, and now last night beating Tampa at home, to move to within 2 percentage points of first place. The Rays have played two fewer games than the Sox, and the Sox have won one and lost one.
The Sox lead in the AL Wild Card race is significant, if not commanding. Boston.com does not report any other contenders at this moment, which I believe means that there is no other team within 6 games. So we should make the playoffs, baring disaster. How far into the playoffs the team will go, I don't know. The Angels could win 102 games this year, and may be very tough to beat. I am confident that the Sox are on the same diamond with the White Sox or the Rays. And I am pretty sure that whoever wins the AL Pennant will win the World Series. So all may be well in Red Sox Nation.

Super Bowl Sunday
None more so than our football team, the New England Pariots. Once the laughingstock of the league, perpetual also-rans, looked down upon, sneered at by the football establishment, they have won 3 Super Bowls in the last 6 years.
Usually, the Super Bowl passes with a scarcely a notice from me. But not when my Patriots are in it!
Today, God willing, they will add a fourth Super Bowl victory by defeating the New York (football) Giants.
GO PATS!!!!!

Patriots Bound For the Super Bowl!
This will be a very interesting match-up, as it tests the loyalty of many New England fans. In the days before the creation of the AFC and the Patriots, the closest team to Boston was the Giants, and they still have a significant following here.

GO PATS!
They say that, on any given Sunday, or in this case, Saturday night, any NFL franchise, no matter how bad the odds against them, can beat any other. I think it is less so the case than it is in baseball, where the longer season means that even the 1927 New York Yankees, as great as they were, did not lose some games to dreadful teams. But it remains a truism.
And Jacksonville is certainly capable of upsetting the Patriots tonight.
But we hope that they do not, and that the 2007/2008 Patriots' progress through the NFL remains unblemished, right through the Super Bowl. I think 19-0 is something this Patriots team is capable of, and would like to see it.
GO PATS!!!!!!!

What's the Matter With the Patriots???
And while we are on the topic of football, Saturday's Boston College loss to Virginia Tech for the ACC title has landed them in the Toilet Bowl, er, I mean the Champs Sports Bowl, Dec. 28 in Orlando, Fla.,against Michigan State. Very disappointing after such a good start. We had a major bowl in our grasp Saturday morning, and ending up in a third-rate bowl is a heck of a kick in the groin. Any bowl known by its sponsor's name ain't worth a bucket of cold, stale p-ss. Orange, Rose, Cotton, Sugar, Liberty. That is where it is at.

Weekend Football Report
On Thanksgiving Day, my Saint John's Prep Eagles bested Xaverian, ending the season, which had started so well, at a disappointing 6-5.
Saturday, my Boston College Eagles defeated Miami 28-14, which gives them a 10-2 record, and sets them up for a game this Saturday against Virginia Tech, for the ACC title.
And the Patriots had a much rougher-than-expected time with the Philadelphia Eagles, but prevailed 31-28, making them 11-0 on the season. They clinched the AFC East yesterday, though the rest of the AFC East is dreadful, and there was little doubt of a division title anyway.

And How About Those Patriots, Huh?
And Boston College had a bye week (they play Virginia Tech Thursday night on the road), but moved up to No. 2 in the nation as a team ranked a head of them stumbled this past weekend.
Unfortunately, St. John's Prep had another bad game, losing again, in what looks like a rebuilding year for the Prep.

A Mixed Weekend Sports-Wise
But all the football news is good. Saint John's Prep recovered from 3 consecutive losses, which basically combine to make the season an irrelevancy, to beat St. John's of Shrewsbury 25-14.
Boston College continues to move up in the national standings. They are No. 3 this morning in the AP Poll. They beat Notre Dame 27-14 in a sloppy and seemingly never-ending game Saturday. The game took 4 hours and featured 14 BC penalties, as well as a missed point after and field goal. Nevertheless, they are now 7-0, as they switch gears and start playing ACC teams again. Next up, a road trip to Virginia Tech on the 25th.
And the Patriots faced another undefeated team in the Dallas Cowboys, on the road. The game was very close up until the half, when the Dallas defense just caved in, and the Patriots were off to a 48-27 romp. Their lead in the AFC East seems insurmountable.

A Glorious Weekend In My Sports World
OK, Bad news out of the way, the best news is that the Red Sox swept the Los Angeles Angels with a 9-0 rout behind a fine pitching performance by Curt Schilling. And to warm New England hearts even more, the Yankees lost last night to the Cleveland Indians, which means they will now be able to start working on their golf games much earlier than Herr Steinbrenner would like. And in his pique that he bought the wrong players, Herr Steinbrenner will likely fire Joe Torre. Good. Where else will he get a better manager?
Now that they have dried out from another champagne bath, the Sox will now face the Indians for the American League championship. This will not be easy. The Indians finished the season with the same record as the Sox. Let us hope that the result of this series is a third champagne bath for the Sox personnel.
Meanwhile, the Patriots continue to dominate the AFC East, and the rest of the NFL. This past weekend's victims were the Cleveland Browns. The result was a 34-17 win. And that gives the Pats a 4-game lead in the AFC East, and we are only at week 5.
Rounding out the football scene, Boston College is now ranked 4th in the nation, the highest my alma mater has ever been ranked. They crushed Bowling Green 55-24. They play Notre Dame, another "Catholic" college that isn't as Catholic as it ought to be, next week. Notre Dame is 1-5 on the season. But they have shown signs of improvement. BC should go into this game with something to prove. They have for generations been unfavorably compared to ND, when, in fact, there is little to choose from between the two. Notre Dame is said to be "the" Catholic university in the US, but BC is the emotional home for New England area Catholic kids. And everyone talks about how great Notre Dame's football tradition is (and it is a fine one). But Boston College has a great tradition, too. The Fighting Irish will try to knock BC down a peg or two, and put us "in our place." And, in fact, so disliked are northeast teams by the college football establishment that a loss would certainly knock BC back to 15th or so. But hopefully BC will be ready for the Irish to come at them hard, and will meet and best the challenge.
Let's see, the Red Sox in the ALCS. The Patriots' juggernaut rolling along. BC ranked 4th in the country. Sweet. May it continue, and may New England's Red Sox, Patriots, and Boston College fans be as happy as I am now one week from now, two weeks from now, three weeks, a month from now, two months, and three and four months from now.

Weekend Sports Wrap-Up
GO RED SOX!!!!!!
Boston College, despite being unimpressive in their 24-14 victory over UMass on Saturday, benefited from other teams ranked ahead of them having off weeks. They surged in the AP Poll from 11th or 12th last week to 7th this week. They are 5-0, and face a tough Bowling Green team this week.
I wish my other Eagles were doing so well. Being a SJP alum, one gets accustomed to victory (I don't thing the golf team has lost a tournament since I was a student there almost 30 years ago). So enduring defeats by Everett last weekend, and by Brockton this past weekend does not sit well. Perhaps this is a rebuilding year for the Prep.
The New England Patriots take on the Cincinnati Bengals tonight on Monday Night Football.

Weekend Sports Wrap-Up
I think that they ought to be ashamed of their second-half performance, especially head-to-head against the Yankees, since they once led them by 14 or so games, but now only by 1.5 games. If they continue to play like they have, they will have their doors blown off in the first round of the playoffs, no matter who they face.
Boston College continued its triumphal march through its schedule. This weekend, it was Army, and the result was a 37-17 victory. They remain at No. 12 in the AP national rankings, and are 4-0. Next up, U-Mass.
The Patriots also continue to dominate. For them, the opponents this weekend were the divisional rival Buffalo Bills. The Pats cruised to a 38-7 romp. Of the games they have played, they have won 38-14, 38-14, and 38-7.
Unfortunately, the Saint John's Prep Eagles were not up to par this weekend. The dropped out of the Boston Globe top 25 with a 35-7 loss to Everett High School. They had been ranked 15th before the loss.

Weekend Sports Wrap-Up
Saint John's Prep beat Central Catholic 12-0, making them 2-0 on the season.
Boston College won its third game (3-0), beating Georgia Tech 24-10. This moved them up to a more respectable 14th in the AP poll this week.
The Patriots put all of the nonsense about their gaining an intelligence-gathering edge on opponents to rest by decisively thrashing the Chargers 38-14. They now have a 2-game lead int he AFC East.
Oh, but what about that Red Sox/Yankees match-up at Fenway? Well, the best that can be said is that they won one game by a wide margin (10-1 on Saturday). And the other two games were exciting and close. But they lost them. Friday, for some reason, closer Jonathan Papelbon said he, "didn't have his head in the game," (YOU DIDN'T HAVE YOUR HEAD IN A SEPTEMBER GAME AGAINST THE YANKEES!!!!!!!!) and blew a great lead. Sunday night, the Yankees won another squeaker. The magic number is now 9, the lead 4.5 games (they lost a game, gained it back, then lost it again). Short of a collapse coupled with another Yankee surge, the Sox will likely win the AL East. And, by a few percentage points, the Sox still have the best record in baseball (though, if you discounted April and May games, the Yankees would probably have a 10-12 game lead now). The Yankees have been dominant since the All Star break, but the Sox built a huge lead early in the season, and have done just enough to hold onto it. How they will fare in the playoffs, I don't know.

Finally Ranked!
Friday night, Saint John's Prep demolished Peabody High 44-0.
Saturday afternoon, Boston College beat NC State 37-17. It was especially sweet since it forced the college football establishment(the overaged, fat, stupid southern boys who call the game "ball") to rank BC in the top 25, however grudgingly. In the AP this morning, they are ranked 21st. In the USA Today rankings, they are 19th. Clemson, who we beat last year, remains ranked ahead of BC in the AP (they are where they belong, below us, in the USA Today). Oh yes, the game also saw the return of despicable former coach O'Brien to BC with his new team. Readers will remember (BC alumni will never forget) how, just weeks before the laughably obscure bowl BC was assigned to by the overaged, fat, stupid southern boys who call the game "ball," that O'Brien jumped ship to North Carolina State leaving the team in turmoil before its bowl game appearance (nevertheless, the kids pulled off a win in enemy territory). Nice to give the traitor back some of his own.
The Patriots dominated the Jets 38-14, taking the lead in the AFC East (I know, its only one game). But if they couldn't beat the Jets, it was going to be a long and painful season for New England fans.
And the Red Sox won 3 out of 4 from the Orioles this weekend, which was only marred by the Yankees once again trying to zoom pass the Sox, flashing the highbeams in our rear-view mirror, as they swept the hapless Royals in KC. They lead the Yankees in the AL East by 5.5 games this morning. The Sox magic number is 14 for the American League East title. But the Yankees are now the favorite for the AL Wildcard.
